Life in a Matrilineal Society | DW Germany

Client – DW- Deutsche Welle, Germany

Production – Rawtales, 2017

We were commissioned by DW Germany to document the matrilineal system of the Khasis in Meghalaya, one of the few societies in the world where lineage and inheritance pass through the women. Over the course of four immersive days, we travelled across different parts of Meghalaya, capturing stories that go beyond tradition, stories of strength, identity, and evolving gender roles.

One such story celebrates the Khar Khadu — the quiet yet powerful figure in the Khasi matrilineal structure, often misunderstood or overlooked. Through intimate portraits and lived experiences, we explored how women anchor family, property, and continuity in Khasi society.

The report was broadcast in five international languages by DW, and aired across the globe during World Women’s Day, marking a powerful tribute to indigenous female-led legacies.
