SASHANKA BARBARUAH - FILMMAKER

In the last 26 years, Sashanka has lived many lives, not by chance, but by choice. What began as a curious foray into research soon evolved into a restless pursuit across mediums, formats, and frontiers. He was never content staying in one frame, he wanted to see the full picture. And so, he shaped identities as a graphic designer, gave voice to unspoken truths as a writer, unlocked hidden geographies as a location fixer, brought order to chaos as a line producer, amplified causes as a PR strategist, and captured raw, urgent moments as a wildlife photographer , reporting on rescue and rehabilitation efforts across Northeast India, from Kaziranga’s floodplains to the cloud-hung hills of Arunachal. Each role added a new layer to his lens. Each discipline taught him to see, deeper, wider, truer.

Over the years, he’s collaborated with some of the most respected names in media, development, and corporates.

Outlook Traveller, Geo France, Deutsche Welle, UNDP, NERSWN- Oxfam, UNICEF, International Fund for Animal Welfare – Wildlife Trust of India, to name a few. He has also handled storytelling and operations for brands like Indian Oil, OIL India, Vodafone, Kotak Mutual Fund, ITC, Pernod Ricard, Red Fm, North East Small Finance Bank, Skyber Aerospace, Zubaan Books.

His work with projects of ETH Zurich, IDH Netherlands, and the World Bamboo Organization further reflects his deepening focus on sustainability, safe space and development, always grounded in human stories.

But in recent years, his attention has turned inward, towards developmental storytelling, built not on spectacle, but on empathy.

From water and hygiene to soil conservation, from women’s empowerment to child trafficking, livelihoods, and sustainable travel, Sashanka has chronicled change through the lives of real people, in real time, with real stakes.

Among these, his eye care campaigns hold a special place. One particular series, produced for a long-standing client, has gone far beyond awareness, raising USD 80,000 annually for several years now, directly funding life-changing surgeries and community outreach. The films have earned international recognition, but more importantly, they’ve changed lives.

For the past 15 years, Sashanka has channelled every hard-won skill, the visual discipline of a designer, the sharpness of a field researcher, the order of a producer, the voice of a writer, and the instinct of a documentarian, into one cohesive form – FILMMAKING.

At Rawtales, he leads the creative vision, crafting corporate films, commercials, and brand documentaries that don’t just inform, but transform.

Films that don’t simply market a product, but unearth a purpose.
